 Bamboo can be used as a construction material for scaffolding, bridges, houses and buildings. Bamboo, like wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio that can be used in construction. The strength-to-weight ratio of bamboo is similar to that of wood, and its strength is generally similar to that of strong softwood or hardwood lumber.

The bamboo structure of the roof can consist of purlins, rafters and trusses. The different forms include bamboo purlins and beams, supported on perimeter columns, corrugated sheets made of bamboo, a layer of asphalt sandwiched between two bamboo mats and plastered bamboo.
